Dunn St Farm (514 Dunn Street/ Tallahassee, FL 32304)
In 2011 on a community garden tour, three youth from the Frenchtown Revitalization Council YELDA (Youth Empowerment and Leadership Development Academy) program expressed a dream to start their own farm.
A year later -- after visioning, developing an urban ag brand (iGrow-Whatever You Like) visiting other farms and gardens, developing the team, and raising funds by selling iGrow Buckets (and via generous grants from the Junior League of Tallahassee and the Tallahassee COPE Coalition) -- the iGrow team installed the Dunn St Farm in the heart of Frenchtown. The plan was to grow good food for the community; most of the produce would be harvested and sold as a way to generate revenue for the program and to give youth first-hand sales and customer service experience. The rest of the food was given away. By the summer of 2013, the iGrow Team has harvested over 1800lbs of food, given away over 100lbs to neighbors and food ministries in Frenchtown's D-Block, earned over $4000 on produce sales, composted thousands of pounds of food waste, and hosted hundreds of volunteers, visitors, and workshop students. iGrow's Dunn St Youth Farm has become a place of learning and meeting ground for folks of all walks to life to investigate and practice ways of growing community-based food systems. There are open pick-to-order market days Mondays and Fridays. Check FB.com/iGrowYouth for hours.
iGrow is a youth empowerment, urban ag and entrepreneurship program of the Tallahassee Food Network.
